SILVEUS

P R E F A C E

Many of you will remember that, a number of years ago, Irene Hays-Trapp, cousin to many of you, collected family history of all of your families. When she was unable to do more with it, her sister, Orpha, suggested that it would be well if someone would type her material for her. Orpha is now gone, and Irene is in a Nursing Home. Much credit for this collection of genealogy should go to Irene, who so diligently searched each family of this great family for their "roots".

I volunteered to type Irene’s material for her. (I am Irene and Orpha’s cousin on the Hays’ side of the family.) When I began typing it, I soon realized there was much information here, which I felt all of the Silveus family should have and enjoy. Consequently, I have attempted to put it all together, family by family, keeping them in consecutive order. Now, I am having it all printed in booklets, hoping each family will want several copies for themselves and the younger generations.

This history is not current, by any means, as little information has been collected for several years, but it will be a good starting point for someone else to continue it. I would have liked more pictures of the older members of the family, but since I am a stranger to most of the family and live a long distance from all of you, it has not been possible to get more. My Aunt Mary’s - your Aunt Mary Hays’ family (Mother and Grandmother to some of you) contributed what we have.

If you could see your ancestors
All standing in a row,
Would you be proud of them?
Or don’t you really know?
Strange discoveries are sometimes made
in climbing the family tree.
Occasionally one is found in line
Who shocks his progeny!
If you could see your ancestors
All standing in a row,
Perhaps there would be one or two
That you wouldn’t care to know.
> Now turn the question, right about
And take another view,
When you shall meet your ancestors,
will they be proud of you?
Report of The Ohio Genealogical Society

The surname of SILVEUS is said by tradition to have been originally spelled S-I-L-F-I-E-S (we now know the spelling to be SILVIUS - mas). The progenitor of the family emigrated from Germany to this country about the year of 1770 (we now know this to be 1738 - mas) , and settled near Philadelphia, PA. Some historians think some of the family came in an early day from Holland and Ireland and settled in Lancaster County, PA., but this genealogy deals with the life and descendants of JOHN BOURMAN SILVEUS, who was born in Green County, Pennsylvania.

One authority believes that John Bourman Silveus may have settled for a time in Lancaster County, Pa., and that he may have married a BIXLER girl, a first cousin, while there, and marrying a cousin was against the religion of the Mennonites in that county. Was that marriage annulled? All records give his wife as CATHERINE CULP.

Regarding another line, Ormond D. Brookens, brother of John Brookens of Taylorville, Illinois, and descendant of Uncle Johnny Dappert, formerly of Taylorville, stated that his mother, Mrs. Elmer (Dappert) Brookens wrote the following information in a large Bible in 1903.

Mr. ? KLINE came to the United States, a widower with three daughters, settled in Baltimore, MD., after wards moved to Penn., and later to Holmes County, Ohio. His descendants were:

1. NANCY KLINE married ? SILVEUS, had two sons and three daughters.

A. WILLIAM SILVEUS lived and died in Ohio, leaving three daughters.

B. JOHN SILVEUS came to Shelby County, Ill., later moved to Texas, afterward came back and lived with Grandpa and Grandma Dappert (Uncle Johnny), died and buried at Mound Cemetery, Christian County, Ill. (No mention of whether he was married or had children.) (He was buried on John Dappert lot.)

C. ANNA SILVEUS married MICHAEL DAPPERT in Holmes Co., Ohio and moved to Shelby Co., Ill., and finally owned large farm; had two boys & three girls:

(1) JACOB DAPPERT of Shelby County.

(2) CATHERINE DAPPERT-GOULD of St. Louis, Illinois.

(3) MARY DAPPERT-MUELLER, of Shelby County.

(4) JOHN DAPPERT, Effingham, County, Ill.

(5) LOUISE DAPPERT-MILLS, Garfield, Kansas - farm.

D. MARY SILVEUS-FISHER, Waterloo, Ind.

E. CATHERINE SILVEUS-DAPPERT (My Grand Parents - Ormond D. Brookens) moved to Christian County, Illinois in 1863 from Holmes County, Ohio.

More information about three members of the above family:

C. ANNA SILVEUS, born 23 June 1824, in Green Co., PA Died 10 Aug. 1900; buried Stewardson Cemetery, Shelby County, Illinois. Married 10 Apr. 1845 to MICHAEL DAPPERT, b. 15 Dec. 1810, Hohenfeldt, Germany. He died 27 July, 1903; buried Stewardson Cemetery. (He moved with his widowed mother, Margaretha Stahl-Dappert, brother, John and two sisters, Catherine Barbara and Margaret Ann, from Germany to Winesburg, Ohio in 1835.)

D. JOHN SILVEUS, born 1827 (52 years of age in 1879), in Green Co., PA. Died 7 Feb. 1879; buried Mound Cemetery, Christian Co., Ill. (See Marker in Mound Cemetery, on John Dappert lot.)

E. CATHERINE SILVEUS, b. 1830, (J.W. Dappert says in Greene Co-, PA) Died 10 May, 1903; buried Mound Cemetery, Christian County, Ill. Married 7 Nov. 1846, JOHN DAPPERT, b. 7 Sept. 1826, Hohenfeldt, Germany, who came to Winesburg, Holmes Co., Ohio, with his widowed mother, Margaretha Stahl-Dappert, two sisters, and one brother, Michael Dappert, in 1935. (His sister Catherine Barbara Dappert married Karl Charles Schenkleberger, and sister Margaret Ann Dappert married Elijah Smith Chesterman. The Chestermans moved to Christian Co., Illinois. Another sister, Rosina Catherine Dappert married Leonhart Wenkheimer in Germany, also came to Ohio in 1835.) In 1863 or 4, John and Catherine Silveus-Dappert moved their family by wagon train to Christian Co., Ill. John died in 1919 in Taylorville, Illinois. He was buried at Mound Chapel Cemetery.

(Bert Hays, who was a member of the following genealogy and custodian of the Mound Cemetery for many years, believed that the Silveus sisters who married the Dappert brothers, were related to JOHN BOURMAN SILVEUS, but he did not know the relationship.)

MARY BOSTON WALKER receives appointment. At the suggestion of Carbondale Campus Chancellor, Robert W. MacVicar at SIU and on the recommendation of the Faculty Sub-Council, Mrs. Walker was appointed "ombudsman", one of only two women serving in this capacity at more than 50 college campuses in America. She served as "grievance man for students," and not only heard many complaints, but also solved many problems. Read of her accomplishments on the next two pages. She also served as Assistant to the Chancellor since 1979, and has worked at SIU 35 years by 1986. Congratulations, Mary! (Ed)

GALE BOSTON DIES ON FISHING TRIP - Gale Boston, 74, collapsed and died suddenly while preparing to go on a fishing trip while vacationing in Lenora, Ontario, Canada, on Sunday, June 17, 1979, with his wife, Lucy, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Monical. They left Farina on Friday, arrived in Canada on Saturday and Gale was stricken about 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

William Gale Boston was born on August 11, 1904, in Christian County, Illinois, and a son of Purley Grandison and Sedalia Landers-Boston. He married Lucy Hays on April 12, 1925, in Christian County.

Mr. and Mrs. Boston and family moved to Farina in 1945 after Gale had started a Chevrolet dealership here. He continued in this business until 1958.

He ran for the office of Farina Village Trustee on April 17, 1951, and was not only victorious but also received the most votes. His final term expired this year and he decided against running as his health had begun to fail. He attended his final meeting as a board member on May 7, 1979, having served 28 consecutive years in that capacity. He was appointed as supervisor of LaClede Township on Thursday, March 24, 1950, to fill the vacancy created by the death of Frank Woerner on March 10, 1950. He remained as supervisor for 17 years, being defeated by E. E. Jahraus, write-in candidate, on April 5, 1977. He was also a member of the Brown Christian Church near Omega, served on the Fayette County Fair Board and was a deputy sheriff for several years.

Survivors include his wife, Luxy of Farina, son, George F. (Bud) Boston of Brandon, Florida; daughter, Mary Walker of Carbondale; two brothers, Lowell Boston of Mira Loma, California and Merle Boston of Galva; three sisters, Ferne Boston and Gladys Denton, both of Owaneco, and Grace Summers of Lake Panasoffkee, Florida; three grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gereld and Percy Boston, and a grandson, Tommy Boston.

The funeral will be conducted at the Rankin-Stonecipher Funeral Home in Farina on Thursday, June 21, 1979, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Arlie Mulvaney of Pana officiating. The Farina Village Board has issued a proclamation for all businesses to close during the funeral hour from 2 to 3 p.m. in his honor. Burial will be in the Farina Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Heart Fund or the American Cancer Society.

BERT ELMER HAYS

A life of remarkable longevity has been lived out in our midst.

Bert Elmer Hays was born on February 3, 1881, in a log cabin in Christian County, Illinois, and went to his long home on January 22, 1983, having fallen only twelve days short of experiencing his 102nd birthday.

Mr. Hays’ father served in the Civil War from Somerset County, Pennsylvania, after which he moved to central Illinois.

Bert was one of seven children born to George Henry and Ann Chesterman Hays, one of whom, Arminda Belle died as a small child.

On May 29, 1901, Bert was married to Mary Lavina Silveus. To this home were born eight children, all of whom survive their father’s passing.

Mr. Hays moved his family to Pawnee County, Kansas in 1929, and to Wichita in 1942. Here he worked at numerous jobs, particularly at Boeing, during World War II. He retired in 1949 due to losing his hearing.

Bert was a member of the Asbury Methodist Church until 1957 when he attended the Free Methodist Church. He had read the Bible through many time.

For many years, he had made his home with his daughter, Orpha, until ill health forced him to move to Stafford Nursing Home, where he passed away.

Bert Hays was a soft-spoken, serene man who loved the out of doors. He kept an immaculate lawn, enjoyed his flowers and once spent his birthday money buying food for his birds.

BERT ELMER HAY’D - Biography

Bert Elmer Hays was born in a log house on the family farm in Christian County, Illinois, on February 3, 1881. His father, George Henry Hey, served in the Civil War from S6merset County, Pennsylvania. After the war ended he moved from Pennsylvania to central Illinois. Here he met and married Anna Chesterman in Christian County, on Feb. 4, 1869. They homesteaded on a small farm south of Taylorville, Illinois. To this union were born John Henry, Nov. 20, 1869; Mary Flora, Jan. 1, 1872; George Francis (Frank), June 13, 1873; Orpha May, Nov. 29, 1878; Bert Elmer, Feb. 3, 1881; Harvey Louis, Mar. 17, 1884. One daughter, Arminda Belle, died as a small child.

Soon after George Henry’s marriage to Anna Chesterman, the Hay name was changed to Hays, because Anna thought the name too short and many people were using the plural name. But George Henry’s Civil War marker bears the name HAY. Irene Hays Trapp and niece, Edith Hays Sooby, have done a lot of research on the family history and were able to trace the Hay family back to Scotland.

Bert married Mary Lavina Silveus on May 29, 1901. To this union were born four sons and four daughters. All are living today. They range in age from 61 years to 79. They are George Nicholas, Wichita; Lucy Marie (Hays) Boston, Farina, Illinois; Alfred Elmer, Holland, Michigan; Annette Irene Hays) Trapp, who now resides in Salt Lake City, Utah; Orpha Malay, Wichita, with whom Bert has resided for many years; Dorothy Geneva (Hays) Davis, Salt Lake City; John Raymond, Wichita; and Bert Eugene of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Bert raised his family on the farm where he was born. His parents moved to Taylorville shortly after he and Mary were married. He remained on the family farm until 1929, when he moved to Pawnee County, Kansas. There had been many years of crop failures due to flooding, etc. Several acres of the farm are now the backwaters of the Taylorville Lake. Bert decided to move to Kansas where his oldest brother, John, had farmed for many years. But the depression came and Bert only farmed a few years in Pawnee County. He did odd jobs for a time and worked as custodian of the Zook Community School for several years. The school no longer exists, but the four younger children Graduated from High School there.

In 1942,Bert and @ry decided to move to Wichita where three of their children were employed. During World War II, he worked at Boeing in the cafeteria or the food-line. Two sons and one daughter served in the military service during this time. John was in the Army and served in the 3rd Armored Division in Europe. Bert Eugene served in the States and helped keep the Navy planes ready for service. Orpha was in the Army Nursing, Corp and was overseas in the Philippines. Daughter Dorothy was the only one at home during those years. She worked at Boeing.

After the War, Bert worked as a custodian at Wesley Hospital. His hearing was failing him so he retired in 1949.

Bert and Mary were members of the Asbury Methodist Church when they lived on North Madison Street. After the move in 1957 to a home near the Veterans Hospital, where Orpha was employed, Bert attended the Free Methodist Church until his hearing became such a handicap.

Bert and Mary celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in May 1951. It was a glorious day for Bert.

Mary Hays was in poor health for several years. She died in May 1954. Since then Bert has depended on daughter Orpha and they became very close.

Bert loved to work in the yard and he kept an immaculate lawn and yard until an illness in his 89th year. But he has remained active and alert. His deafness end his recent poor eyesight have been his biggest handicaps. Due to increasing handicaps and the illness of his daughter, Orpha, Bert has resided in the Stafford Nursing Home at 2280 S. Minneapolis for four months. He ambulates with a walker and wheel chair. His biggest problem is communication. But he has a good memory for his years. Since his admission to the Nursing Home he dwells more on past events because he says he has nothing- else to do.

The Hays family has a history of living over the usual life span. Oldest brother, John, lived south of Larned and died at age 90 years and 6 months; Brother Frank lived in Taylorville, Illinois. He almost made it to 100, but died at age 09 years and 6 months. Sister Flora Schiver lived in Casey, Illinois; she died at 88. Sister Orpha McMunn lived in Mulvane and Emporia most of her life; she died at 91. Youngest brother, Harvey was an invalid for many years and only lived to be 66 years of age. Bert is the only remaining sibling.

Bert never drank or smoked end he lived a very simple life. He has always accepted life as it comes. He is loved and respected by his family, friends, neighbors and those who are now caring for him at the Stafford Nursing Home.

FORMER RESIDENT RECALLS EARLY DAYS AT OWANECO Miss Fern Boston, postmistress at Owaneco, recently received the following letter from ELMER J. SILVEUS of Dover, Ohio, a former resident of the Owaneco Community.

Owaneco News, Oct. 24, 1957

Dear Old Timers: As my mind travels back past fifty years ago, I recall it is said, if you drive out of the old town (Owaneco) you will want to come back. Well, that is a place that I have not forgotten some sacred spots. To me one was Grandpa Silveus’ old broom shop. Now, he has been dead a little over 54 years.

H-3 ELMER J. SILVEUS and GRACE KING (Continued)

I call to mind the many shouts of the old Free Methodist Church and the old Mound Chapel, also the U.B. Church and the M.E. Church 50 years ago. I was not raised with a silver spoon and "hard work will kill No man", and "poverty is no disgrace," but I must say this: "A man’s beginning is not his ending." I can say it was 53 years ago since I was converted and sanctified, and now in my 51 years of ministry I have read the New Testament 314 times.

This is a little history from one of the old town boys from Owaneco. I am the oldest member left of the Silveus family that came to Owaneco when I was 14 years of age, and now at 73 years of age I still cut wood and saw with a two-man saw all by myself. I eat three meals a day and enjoy my Limburger cheese and fried chicken. I can call to mind the many rabbit hunts around Owaneco. Well, this is ‘Butch’ as they call me.

Elder Elmer J. Silveus, Dover, Ohio

About ELDER ELMER SILVEUS, Tuscarawas Co., Dover, Ohio. Oct. 10, 1964 Wonderful Life, by Juanita Abel, Dailey Reporter, Women’s Editor

An elderly little man with a bushy graybeard is seen rummaging through trashcans at stores along 3rd St., and immediately speculation begins. He is a hermit! He lives in a shack filled with the junk he collects; he is an eccentric, who wanders into town occasionally to forage for rubbish; he is associated with some organization that doesn’t permit members to shave! But, a brief conversation with the kind old gentleman quickly proves these statements are merely wrong guesses. An hour’s conversation with the octogenarian was a fascinating experience, as he unfolded his life story with English employed by an educated man.

The subject is Elder Elmer Silveus who resides in a little apartment at the rear of 212 N. Tuscarawas Ave., Dover, Ohio. Despite any rumors, the little place is spotlessly clean, as is its occupant, and not a piece of junk is in sight.

More than a 100 years ago the Silveus family (Grandpa was a Mennonite Minister) emigrated to Winesburg, Ohio, from their home in Lancaster, Pa. They helped build Longnecker Mennonite Church near Winesburg, where services have been held for 127 years with an average Sunday attendance of 125. Later the family moved to Buckeye Prairie, Ill., and it was there that Elmer was born on 17 July, 1884.

As a young man, he decided that his work was to preach the gospel and aid the less fortunate, as the ministry that was to last 56 years began about 63 years ago.

In his youth, Elmer attended school at Trail and it was there that he met Grace King, who later became his wife and helpmate.

Elmer attended American Bible Institute in Indiana and Moody Bible School in Chicago and Grace attended the Cincinnati Bible School. She had a lovely voice, and she was able to help greatly - with the music in the Mission.

The couple "homesteaded", as Elmer puts it, in a log cabin in Randolph County, Ark., and with a bit of justifiable pride he recalls that four young men entered the ministry after attending services in the little church he headed there.

A SILVEUS Which one?

A-1 JOHN BOURMAN SILVEUS and CATHERINE CULPB-3 NICHOLAS JOHNSON SILVEUS and CAROLINE KATHERINE FISHERH-3 ELMER J. SILVEUS and GRACE KING (Continued)His teaching included Missions in Western States and Mexico and rehabilitation work in the state and federal penal institutions.

Following the death of his wife nine years ago, the man with the sparkling eyes and gentle voice moved back to Dundee, Ohio, where his only daughter, Mrs. John (Mary) Phillabaum resides. He has a son, Samuel, who lives in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and 18 grand and great, grandchildren.

A man accustomed to a lot of out-door exercise, he commuted to Dover on foot almost daily till about four years ago, when he made Dover his permanent home.

"I can only take short walks now", he explained. "I used to walk 10 or more miles a day, but I’ve cut down to three or four now" . Much of his walking is through the woods where he gathers berries, herbs, fruit and flowers. A bright bouquet of bittersweet on my living-room coffee table is a pleasant reminder of a recent visit with Silveus.

"You know," he said with a chuckle, "people think I’m an oddity because I wear this beard, and the explanation is very simple. I have a skin disorder that flares up when I shave, so I just quit shaving. I suppose I do have some unusual habits, but I guess a man of my age is entitled to a few eccentricities."

A man his age also is entitled "to take things easy", but this one doesn’t. He recently opened up the Upper Room Mission in an apartment above his living quarters, where he conducts services Sunday afternoons and Bible School Monday and Thursday evenings.

And, it is here that the items he collects are used. Clothing and other useful things are given to those who need them, and a mended toy or trinket gladdens the heart of a youngster. Mr. Silveus, despite the fact that he has the use of only one eye, reads without glasses since regaining what he calls 11 second sight", a number of years ago. His health is good, memory excellent, and he attributes these blessings to the fact that he has taken care of the body God gave him. "I encourage my people to live right," he stated. "I don’t believe in taking narcotic drugs, over eating, or being idle."

"I think if people took long walks, ate properly, and lived clean lives they have every opportunity to live a long life. God intended for man to be king and if he cannot rule his own life he probably won’t be very successful with any other job he undertakes."

Although hunting and fishing are no longer a part of his life and he is not able to be as active as he once was, Elder Silveus plans to continue doing the Lord’s work for a long time.

Harvey was in the Navy, World War I. No children. Occupation, carpenter. Member First Church Nazarine & Castle Williams Post #105, American Legion. Uncle Harvey Silveus sang this old Civil War Song to Bert Hays, his brother in-law and Irene Hays-Trapp in his home in Decatur in May 1969.

"It’s Not Always The Bullets That Kill"

Dear Uncle, 0 why are you sighing?

I’ve been watching you all the day.

They said you were a soldier, and

I always thought soldiers were gay.

They said when you were young you fought

in the war and oh how the bullets did fly.

But, I think it’s too bad you are always so sad,

And the bullets have all passes you by.

It’s not always the bullets that kill.

It was a woman so fair and her beauty so rare,

She plied her true love to me under the old willow tree,

But her love passed away and my heart broke that day.

It’s not always the bullets that kill.

A woman’s form darkened the doorway

And a sweet gentle voice cried

"Roy, can’t you see my poor heart is breaking

I heard what you said to my boy.

I married your brother because we both heard."

To save the flag you gave your life.

But it’s all a mistake and you came too late.

Those words cut her heart like a knife.

It isn’t always the bullets that kill

Though some day I pray they will.

Tt was a woman so fair and her beauty so rare

And a face like an angel above,

And she Plied her true love to me beneath the old willow tree.

But her love passed away and my heart broke that day.

And it isn’t always the bullets that kill!

Uncle Harvey said our grandmother, Caroline Silveus, used to sing this song and that is where he learned to sing it. Also Aunt Amanda Stivers sang it to her family years ago. (More about Aunt Amanda later.)
